The 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez rookie card is definitely Alex's most sought after card.  Be Upper Deck SP Rookie is extremely rare and very condition sensitive.  With Alex Rodriguez possibly being the best baseball player ever to play the game this is going to be the card that jumps the most in the price guide.  The 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez rookie card was produced by upper deck on a foil type cardboard that is easily chipped and breaks apart at the corners.  This makes a Mint or Gem Mint card very hard to find.  I have seen a Gem Mint version of this card sell for upwards of $13,000 at the peak of the baseball card market.  With the current economy and the dumb you can now purchase this same Gem Mint Alex Rodriguez 1994 SP rookie card for almost one third the price at $4000.  That is absolutely amazing considering it has only been about five years since the card reached the pinnacle of its value.  Does this mean that the card will never reach the $13,000 mark again?  Absolutely not in my opinion.  This card is extremely rare and almost impossible to find in Gem Mint Condition.

I can even say that these cards that have been graded a mint nine are also extremely hard to find.  So now the real question is how much should you pay for this card and which ones should you buy?  Should you invest in a gem mint 10 version or with the same amount of money purchase a lot of mint nines?  I guess that's really going to be up to you do to the fact that they are both great values.  If you are confused about the difference between a Gem Mint 10 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez Rookie Card and a similar mint nine version then what you need to understand is that a gem mint 10 version should have no visual flaws while a mint nine version might have one small or minor flaw.  The Alex Rodriguez SP rookie card had a very small production run by Upper Deck.   When you understand how conditioned sensitive this card really is and its low production run you can now understand why dealers are trying to accumulate as many as they can.  Please do not be fooled and overpay for cards that have not been professionally graded.
