Alex Rodriguez’s status as a promising player even as a rookie is evident in the number of Alex Rodriguez rookie cards produced in 1994, when he made his major league debut with the Seattle Mariners as a starting shortstop. A rookie card is the first card produced of a particular player as part of a sports card set; note that this definition only covers licensed and nationally-distributed sets. Also, the card must also be part of the base set rather than an insert (you can distinguish insert cards from regular cards as they have a numbering different from the base set or may have no number at all).

There are six Alex Rodriguez rookie cards: the Upper Deck SP #15, the Collector’s Choice rookie card # 647; the Flair Card # 340; the Fleer Update #86, the Upper Deck #24 and the Sportflics Rookie/Traded #148. Of these, the most valuable is undoubtedly the SP #15, but some of the other cards will also fetch high prices.

For example, take the Collector’s Choice card. Collector’s Choice was an imprint of Upper Deck featuring card sets targeted at younger collectors. Pack prices were correspondingly cheaper, with packs retailing at around a dollar. This particular card was a variant of the Alex Rodriguez baseball card, which featured a silver foil signature of Rodriguez on the front. This card has two versions; the more valuable (and rarer) one has Alex Rodriguez’s name in plain white lettering rather than silver. This “White Letter” card can fetch as much as $500 if in mint condition while the more common silver version will only sell for twenty dollars.

The book values of the other Alex Rodriguez rookie cards are not nearly as much, with the Flair Update #86 listed at between $12.50 to $30, and the Upper Deck #24 with a book value of $25. But these listed prices may plummet as A-Rod continues to try and live down his recent admission that he used steroids. Still, if he succeeds in redeeming himself in the eyes of sports fans, Alex Rodriguez rookie cards may once again become a choice collector’s investment.
